BERLIN ? Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti says he would support a new tax on financial transactions so long as it applies to the European Union as a whole.
Speaking after meeting Wednesday with Chancellor Angela Merkel, Monti indicated his preference for such a tax for the whole 27-nation bloc, rather than just the 17 countries that use the euro as their currency.
Monti says "we are open to supporting this initiative at the EU level."
Such a tax had been rejected by the Berlusconi government, but Monti had already said that his government might consider it.
In a meeting Monday in Berlin, Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy said they would seek such a tax at the EU level, but indicated they might be prepared to push ahead with it on the eurozone level.
